Character Portraits

From sketch to final image, let me bring your character to life!

Multi-Character Scenes

Commemorate your adventure together!

Avernus Poster: a scene depicting six party members and their NPC friends as they near the end of their Descent to Avernus campaign.Testimonial from Andy:Working with Heather was an amazing experience. I brought a very complex and detailed commission to Heather and she knocked it out of the park. From start to finish she had great communication allowing us to see how the commission was taking shape and letting us explain exactly what we wanted. Heather did a fantastic job of handling all our feedback. When we got the final version I was blown away by the attention to detail and love in our commission. Small details that we mentioned had been included and it really made a difference. Working with Heather has been one of my best experiences and I cannot recommend her enough! She made a magical piece for us that I treasure.

Illustration

Panacea

Interior illustrations for the Panacea trilogy by L. Ana Ellis

These illustrations feature the three main characters from the Panacea trilogy: Mariela, Cooper, and Amaya. Black and white versions at the start of each book help give a glimpse into who each character is and what they want, and coloured versions sold as prints by the self-published author help draw in potential audiences. My goal with each illustration was to hint at the multifaceted inner worlds of each character: Mariela is a high-profile and secretive morally grey hero; Cooper is passionate and intelligent, but also stubborn and old-fashioned; and Amaya is resolute and hopeful.Throughout the illustrations, shifting balances of blues and oranges signify the virtual/tech worlds and the physical/analogue worlds respectively, as each character and book explores a different side of a dystopian sci-fi future.Testimonial from Elle:It was fascinating watching the illustration go from sketch to final product. Heather was a joy to work with and really took her time to understand the character and to make sure that the character matched what was in my head and in the story.

Ultimate Backpack Adventure

A portfolio piece featuring original characters

A Curse Unspeakable

Cover art for the Mage's Eye series by Morgan I. Gerhart

I created the layout, art, and cover text for the first book in this YA/NA fantasy series.A Curse Unspeakable follows Glory, a young woman with a troubled past who finds a home among a travelling caravan. With bright colours, rolling hills, mountains, and an idyllic plant-filled landscape, the art tells of a warmhearted found-family adventure.

TwinSoul

Based on the character featured in The Lost Metal by Brandon Sanderson

Witness to the Storm

Mock cover for a friend's unpublished manuscript

"Unlikely friends must work together to withstand the storm ..."I created this mock cover for a friend's story, Witness to the Storm. Starting from a rough sketch/scene description, I designed the layout, illustration, and title text to evoke traditional fantasy/sci-fi novels.

Children's Art

Dust Dragons

Three tiny dust dragons go on an adventure to the Mountain of Peace in this heartfelt story about treasuring each moment.

I worked with author Steven Reutiman to bring his idea from words on a page to fully-illustrated picture book. From storyboarding and concept art to sketches and rendering to final typesetting and proofs, we worked collaboratively to ensure the text and images came together in harmony. The book successfully launched on Kickstarter (it was even designated as a Kickstarter "Project We Love"!) and is now available to buy on Amazon.Testimonial from Steve:Heather was an absolute joy to work with on this project. Her passion for the story and talent in bringing it to life with exquisite artwork was astonishing. She was an amazing partner and collaborator from storyboarding to final illustrations, and far exceeded any and all expectations I had for this book.

Indira's Hockey Dreams

An illustrated picture book about sport, diversity, and belonging.

Testimonial from Meera:I was so fortunate to find illustrator Heather Friedel, a fellow Canadian, to join me in this project. I found some of Heather's illustrations online and reached out to find out if she would be interested in illustrating Indira's Hockey Dreams. She was onboard immediately and I have learned so much from our collaboration and partnership. Her illustrations truly bring the magic of Indira's story to life! The book successfully launched on Kickstarter.

Comic Commissions

Sometimes I take a break from my painterly style by experimenting with the bold lines, shapes, and colours of a comic style. These drawings/commissions can be very silly and fun - bringing a smile to my face (and hopefully yours too!).

Landscapes

& Personal Work

Traditional Landscapes and Plein Air

Landscapes - especially in pastel - are my true passion. I love light and colour and trying to capture a time and atmosphere on my surface in just a few hours before the light changes. I also dabble in watercolour, gouache, and oil.Find more on my dedicated Instagram, heatherly.art.

Digital Landscape Studies

I painted over 100 landscape studies as part of my quest to become familiar with digital painting technques in ProCreate and to increase my understanding of landscape/environment composition and design. Each study is based on a photograph I took myself.Find the whole collection on my dedicated Instagram, heatherly.landscape.

Portraits

Portraits are one of my favourite ways to relax and practice painting!
